Dental Surgery for Dogs, Cats & Ferrets
What is Dental Surgery for Pets
At CHVC, we perform dental surgery for pets in Prince George, BC, including extractions, tumour removal, and jaw fracture repair.
Dental surgery for pets includes procedures such as tooth extraction, treatment for periodontal disease, and the removal of oral tumors as well as less common procedures such as jaw fracture repair.
Why We Perform Dental Surgery for Pets
Pets are as susceptible to periodontal disease as humans.
Pets are as susceptible to periodontal disease as humans, and most have it by three years of age, undetectable to their families, due to poor or non-existent dental care. This causes oral pain, infection, inflammation, tooth loss, and other health problems, including the introduction of harmful bacteria into the blood stream.
Periodontal disease often has symptoms that require dental surgery to correct.
If your pet is suffering a loss of appetite, is having trouble eating, is drooling excessively, has bad breath, yellow or brown build up on their teeth, is pawing at their face, has loose teeth, or has red, swollen gums, you should schedule a dental exam appointment for them.

What to Expect from Your Pet’s Dental Surgery
Dental surgery is conducted under general anaesthesia, so your pet will need to fast for 12 hours before hand.
We will do a full exam of their mouth and teeth first, then perform X- rays to determine if any extractions or other procedures are necessary. If we do discover additional issues, we will discuss them with you before taking action.
We will monitor your pet closely during the entire procedure until they are completely awake. Your pet will be groggy and should be watched while they recover, but you can bring them home. Your pet can have a small, soft meal that night.
We’ll discuss post-surgery care with you in detail before and after your pet’s dental surgery and provide you with pain medication and a schedule for when and how to administer it. Your pet will need a follow-up appointment so we can check how they are healing post-surgery, so we’ll set that up with you as well before you leave.
