Behavioural Consultations for Pets

What is a Behavioural Consultation for Pets?

Determining the root cause of problem behaviours, and teaching you how to correct them.

At College Heights Veterinary Clinic in Prince George, we’ll work with you and your dogs, cats, and ferrets to determine the root cause of problem behaviours like house soiling, aggression, and anxiety and provide solutions for correcting them. It keeps you and your pets happier and safer.

Unlike with obedience training, which mainly exists to train and teach your pet, the goal of behavioural consultations is to address and mitigate problematic behaviours that stem from challenges other than a lack of training. We’ll work with you to find the root cause of problematic behaviours in your pet and develop a plan to address them.

Problem behaviours include aggression, anxiety, house soiling, and compulsive behaviours. Sometimes they’re the result of stress or medical issues. We’ll rule out underlying health problems then provide you techniques for behavioural modification, environmental changes, or even medications depending on the reason and type of behaviour.

When to Book

When should you consider booking a Behavioural Consultation?

Your pet’s happiness and health are always our primary concern, and of course, when underlying issues cause fear, aggression, or anxiety, it can be dangerous for them and other members of your household, especially any children.

We can diagnose and treat the underlying cause of behavioural problems and provide solutions such as anti-anxiety medication.

What to Expect from a Behavioural Consultation for Your Pet

We’ll discuss the behavioural issues you’ve observed and observe your pet’s interactions to understand their problems and triggers.

It’s best to come prepared with a log of your pet’s history, behaviour patterns at home, and lifestyle.

We’ll perform a physical exam, and if necessary, additional tests to rule out medical conditions that could be causing or exacerbating your pet’s behaviours. Then, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan, including behaviour modification techniques, recommendations for environmental changes, and any medications or other medical treatment necessary.

We’ll also schedule some follow-up appointments with you and your pet to check on your pet’s progress and adjust the treatment plan.
