Laser Therapy for Dogs, Cats & Ferrets in Prince George

What is Veterinary Laser Therapy?

A great way to improve circulation and promote healing in your pets.

At CHVC, we use laser therapy for dogs, cats, and ferrets at our clinic in Prince George, BC. Laser therapy is very effective in improving circulation and promoting healing, which cuts down on pain, stiffness, and inflammation.

Laser therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses a low-level beam of light to reduce pain and inflammation and speed up healing. A laser emits light that penetrates the tissue without damaging it, and when it’s absorbed by the cells, it triggers a series of reactions called photobiomodulation, which stimulates cellular response to promote healing. It can even result in endorphin releases, increased blood flow, and a reduction in inflammatory chemicals.

There’s no need for sedation for laser therapy. Your pet will be awake and aware. Most even find it soothing because the light emits a gentle warmth.

Why We Use Veterinary Laser Therapy

Laser therapy works by increasing circulation, which reduces pain and inflammation.

This treatment reduces the amount of time needed for cells to heal by anywhere from one half to two thirds of the total recovery time.

We most often use it to treat inflammation, pain, and acute trauma, but it is particularly successful for treating chronic conditions, which left to themselves cause pain, stiffness, and a loss of mobility. Laser therapy is often incredibly successful with reducing pain and giving pets back some of the carefree movement and joy they had earlier in life.

What to Expect from Your Pet’s Laser Therapy Appointment

A quick overview of the laser therapy process.

For a laser therapy appointment, we’ll bring your pet in and place them on a table with some little goggles to protect their eyes. We’ll hold a wand, which emits the light for the laser therapy over the problem areas for several minutes. This is entirely painless, and often soothing for the animals.

The entire process usually takes anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes but can take up to 30 minutes, depending on the treatment. We can give you an idea of what to expect ahead of time.

Some people see incredible improvement in their pets after only one treatment, but usually several are needed to really help, especially with chronic conditions. Laser therapy has a cumulative effect, so the more times your pet is treated, the more it helps. With that in mind, often, we’ll recommend laser therapy as a series of treatments to get your pet the most benefit from them.
